Embrace the Soothing Power of Lemon Balm

As an avid herbalist, I've cultivated a deep appreciation for the diverse botanical treasures nature has to offer. While I have many favorite herbs in my herbal medicine cabinet, there's one that holds a special place in my heart – Lemon Balm. Let's delve into why Lemon Balm captivates me and why it's a cherished staple in my herbal medicine cabinet.

Lemon Balm, scientifically known as Melissa officinalis, has a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. Believed to have originated in Southern Europe, it spread across the world thanks to the Moors in the 7th century. The name "Melissa" is Greek for "honey bee," a nod to its mild minty yet tangy citrus scent that is said to attract pollinators like a magnet, while "officinalis" signifies “used in medicine”. During the Middle Ages, Lemon Balm was esteemed by monastic communities for its role in soothing digestive discomfort, calming nerves, and overall supporting wellbeing with its antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory

properties. Its versatility was showcased in Carmelite Water, a beloved tincture developed by Carmelite Nuns in France with the earliest recipe dating to 1379. For those of you familiar with pomanders (check out the blog post I wrote during the Winter Solstice here), Lemon Balm served a similar purpose in Tudor era homes, where it was scattered across floors to infuse the air with its delightful fragrance and purifying properties.

Today, Lemon Balm remains a source of comfort, particularly for individuals grappling with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Its mood-balancing effects provide a welcome reprieve during darker days, while its gentle nature makes it an ideal addition to add hormone-balancing blends during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Incorporating Lemon Balm into your daily routine, whether through soothing teas or invigorating tinctures, can help fortify your emotional resilience and bolster your immunity.

In my own herbal practice, I've witnessed firsthand Lemon Balm's transformative powers. Its ability to uplift the spirits and restore inner equilibrium is unparalleled, making it an indispensable component of my wellness rituals. Through careful blending and experimentation, I've curated three tea blends that harness Lemon Balm's versatility and healing properties – Allergy Relief, Moon Balance, and Citrus Mint Relax. Each blend is meticulously crafted to address specific wellness needs, inviting you to embark on a journey of holistic rejuvenation - you can find them in the apothecary here.

Whether savored as a comforting cup of tea on a crisp evening or integrated into daily self-care rituals, Lemon Balm beckons us to embrace the restorative gifts of nature. Join me in raising a cup to this beloved herb and the boundless wisdom and wellness it shares with us.
